Book Review: Food Americana

 


Creating Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and hands-on producing its first eleven seasons gave food journalist David Page an appetite for the world of American food. It is that experience, the discoveries of little-known stories and facts, that led him to dig even deeper and tie the strands together now. Food Americana is an engaging and entertaining combination of food culture and pop culture, nostalgia and the newest food obsessions. 

This book is wonderfully written and tells the story of how American food has transformed over the years to what it is today.  I highly recommend reading Food Americana. The stories are so interesting.  I especially enjoyed the story about White Castle and the couple of fanatics who parked their travel trailer 96 hours  ahead of time in front of the Arizona location that was the first outlet that was going to be in the area so they could be the first to indulge in the steamed delicious burgers.  They woke up the morning of the grand opening and stormed the castle in midieval costumes.  The story goes on to talk about the success of the location and how they sold out so quickly.  

That is just one of many stories that talk about some of America’s favorite dishes.
